Project Hail Mary

In 2020, MGM bought the film rights to produce film adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel, “Project Hail Mary” a year before publication. It’s about a middle school science teacher, Ryland Grace who wakes up in a spaceship with no memory on how he got here in the first place. Moments Later, he remembers a space organization recruited him on a mission to save Earth. During his journey, he meets a rock alien named, Rocky who’s also on a mission to save his own planet. They form a partnership using their intellect in an attempt to save each other’s world.

The novel was officially published in 2021 becoming a bestseller. Amazon purchased MGM in 2022. The company waited for Phil Lord & Christopher “Chris” Miller to complete “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” which was released in 2023. The duo finally commenced filming in 2024 with Ryan Gosling headlining the film. Project Hail Mary came out on March 20, 2026. It received huge praise and was a box office hit. Anyway, I have a three legit reasons why I wanna share my opinion on Phil & Chris’ latest film.

  1. Ryan Gosling will headline “Star Wars: Starfighter.” It’s not a 100% adaptation of the video game. It’s set after “The Rise of Skywalker.” The former will he released on May 28, 2027.
  2. Mr. Gosling will portray “Ghost Rider” set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe coming in 2028.
  3. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are currently writing the script for “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.” It’ll be released on June 18, 2027.

Today’s review contains no SPOILERS.

Smart & Dumb Qualities

Smart: Ryan Gosling did a superb job for his performance. He also served as a co-producer.

Other Cast Members such as Sandra Hüller, Ken Leung & Lionel Boyce all did a decent job for their respective performances.

Phil Lord & Christopher Miller both did a splendid job as co-directors. They also served as co-producers.

Drew Goddard (MCU Daredevil, The Martian, Cloverfield) wrote the script. Made sure important plot points were properly coordinated.

Daniel Pemberton (Spider-Verse movies, Birds of Prey, Slow Horses) orchestrated the soundtrack.

Practical Effects were heavily involved creating the spaceship and Rocky was built and controlled by puppeteers.

Visual Effects were used sparingly. Mr. Lord & Mr. Miller took inspiration from Christoper Nolan. Known for using old school effects and less CGI

Speaking of Mr. Nolan, the film is told in non-linear format. In other words, out-of-order. Coincidentally, “The Odyssey” came out four months after Project Hail Mary.

Cinematography’s nearly shot on IMAX. The aspect ratio switches widescreen in flashbacks and full screen (IMAX) in Present Day.

Chemistry between Grace & Rocky serves as the main highlight. Seeing them together are light peanut butter and chocolate as in a Reece’s Peanut Butter Cup.

Pacing wasn’t a slow burn. I was hooked right from the get-go.

Funny Moments that made me chuckle. Rebel Wilson wishes she were funny in “Bride Hard.”

We learn about Grace’s background via flashbacks.

Fun Facts

  1. Ryan appeared in a viral video promoting the film on a fake episodes of “Jeopardy.” Check out the video on YouTube.
  2. As of 2026, Project Hail Mary is currently the highest-grossing film in MGM’s post-Amazon purchase era.

Random Thoughts

  1. Okay, I admit, I never read the book. I saw a trailer for the film. I listed it as one of my “Top 12 Anticipated Films of 2026.”
  2. I never got a chance to see Project Hail Mary on the big screen. Been busy on a few things like watching TV shows and anime. I finally watched the film on Prime Video.
  3. Hard Science Fiction is one of my favorite subgenres. I consider the Cyperpunk subgenre as my all-time favorite.

Dumb: I couldn’t find nothing wrong. I’m giving the cast and crew an Extra Point for making a flawless epic space adventure film as possible.

The Final Verdict: A, FOR APEX!

Project Hail Mary exceeded my expectations. I really enjoyed the performances, old school effects, the space mission and last but not least, the dynamic chemistry between Grace & Rocky. From my point of view, I see this as a “Movie of the Year” contender. This is my second film of 2026 earning my highest grade, an A, FOR APEX after The Odyssey. I still have a few flicks to watch before I declare who will take the top spot for “Top 12 Films of 2026.” In the meantime, check out Project Hail Mary on Prime Video. Definitely worth your spare time.
