In 2019, Nicolas “Nic” Cage turned down a role based on fictional version of himself in “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” four times. He eventually changed his mind when director, Tom Gormican wrote him a personal letter. After losing a major role in a movie, Nic quits show biz. He accepts a $1 million offer to meet billionaire, Javi as the guest of honor at a birthday party. The pair instantly become friends. Suddenly, Nic gets caught in a CIA mission forced to work with them to stop an arms dealer.
Released in 2022, (same year Elden Ring came out) the meta comedy earned praise from critics and movie goers alike. Unfortunately, it was a commercial flop failing to recoup its $30 million budget and advertising expenses. Anyway, Nic Cage will attend Fan Expo Dallas 2026 in September 12-13. Which is Saturday and Sunday. I plan on taking my pic with Mr. Cage along with Charlie Sheen, Elijah Wood & Sean Astin. It’s gonna be epic.
This review contains no SPOILERS. I’m giving you a chance to see this meta comedy.
Right & Wrong Aspects
Right: Nicolas “Nic” Cage & Pedro Pascal both did a fantastic job for their respective performances. Nic also co-produced the film.
Other Cast Members such as Tiffany Haddish & Neil Patrick Harris both did a decent job for their respective performances.
Tom Gormican did a good job directing. He also co-wrote the script with Kevin Etten. A former writer of David Letterman’s talk show.
Action Sequences are pretty good.
Funny Moments filled with meta humor made me laugh so hard.
Mark Isham (ABC’s Once Upon a Time, The Secret Life of Bees, The Conjuring) orchestrated the soundtrack.
Cinematography’s shot in stable condition.
Pacing wasn’t a slow burn. Opening Scene got me hooked.
Nic’s chemistry with Javi serves as the main highlight. Their bromance is ten times better than the cast of Judd Apatow’s unfunny comedy, “The Bubble.” It’s ironic because Pedro was in it. Judd’s a has-been who hasn’t made a good movie since “Knocked Up.”
Although Nic appears as himself, his family members are fictional. For example, one of his real life sons, Kal-El (named after Superman’s kryptonian name) is absent. Not intended as a biographical film of his life and career.
If you’re a fan of Nic’s work, there’s a few references. You can tell this is a love letter to Mr. Cage’s work.
A silent movie called, “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” is often mentioned in dialogue.
Unlike most buddy cop and rom-com flicks, this one doesn’t have a temporary break-up. A breath of fresh air.
Demi Moore makes a cameo appearance. Coincidentally, her movie, “Indecent Proposal” has a similar plot of somebody accepts $1 million to hang out with a billionaire.
Fun Facts
- That one scene with Javi smiling in the car becoming a meme. In a good way. This time, Mama Cass’ “Make Your Own Kind of Music” plays in the background.
- This is Nic’s 104th movie. Reason why he was in a bunch of movies? He had to pay off massive debts. He’s a shopaholic spending millions on Action Comics #1, a medieval castle in Germany, another castle in England, a country manor in Rhode Island, bought property in the Bahamas, luxury cars, private jet, yachts and outbid Leonardo DiCaprio for dinosaur skull. Not kidding. Google it.
- Pedro is actually a fan of Nic’s work in real life. He must’ve been starstruck.
- Kate Beckinsale’s daughter, Lily Sheen plays Nic’s fictional daughter, Addy. I didn’t notice Kate’s kid followed in her footsteps. Didn’t feel like blatant nepotism like Jaden Smith failing to live up to his father’s acting chops. Jaden was good in “The Pursuit of Happyness” & “The Karate Kid” with Jackie Chan. Jaden’s acting career isn’t in good shape since “After Earth.”
Wrong: I couldn’t find nothing wrong. I’m giving the cast and crew an Extra Point for making a flawless movie as possible.
The Final Verdict: A, FOR APEX!
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is a legitimately hilarious meta comedy. At first, I did not expect it to be this good. All the positive stuff listed above, indicates why it’s definitely worth your spare time. If you’re a fan of Nicolas “Nic” Cage work or into meta comedy, give it a shot.
