During his early years, Jon Favreau got a gift from his father. Screenwriting software as some sort of exercise to test his creative mind. He wrote a script called, “Swingers.” Loosely based on a break-up and his real life bestie, Vince Vaughn, the film follows aspiring comedian, Mike Peters dealing with a break-up from his girlfriend. His best friend, Trent a womanizer who attempts to cheer him up by taking him to casino, socialize with other friends and help him find a potential significant other. After filming was completed, Miramax distributed the film. Rather than hiring Hollywood big names like Johnny Depp, Jon recruited Vince as Trey. Jon himself portrays Mike. Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow, Mr. and Mrs Smith, The Bourne Identity) was hired as a cinematographer and director.
Released in 1996, (same year Star Trek: First Contact came out) it earned praise from critics and movie goers alike. In addition to good reviews, the film was also a box office success. Swingers launched the careers of Jon Favreau, Vince Vaughn, Ron Livingston & Doug Liman. Speaking of careers, I have three good reason why I wanna share my opinion on Swingers.
- Jon Favreau’s highly anticipated “The Mandalorian and Grogu” will be released on May 22, 2026.
- Vince Vaughn is working on a second season of “Bad Monkey.” It’ll stream sometime around 2026 or 2027.
- Vince will co-star with Ryan Reynolds & Jason Momoa in an adventure comedy titled, “Animal Friends.” It’ll be released in January 22, 2027.
Today’s review contains no SPOILERS. I’m giving you fellas a chance to see this independent ‘90s comedy.
Rich & Poor Qualities
Rich: Jon Favreau, Vince Vaughn & Ron Livingston all did a superb job for their respective performances. In addition to playing the lead role, Jon also wrote the script. Made sure some plot elements remain intact.
Doug Liman did a good job directing. Plus, he also shot the film as a cinematographer.
Heather Graham makes a brief appearance.
A few Funny Moments made me laugh. Most of the dialogue’s improvised thanks to Jon, Ron & Vince’s training in theatre. Some of the dialogue driven jokes are funnier than these unfunny comedies from 1996. Boy, it wasn’t a good year for comedy.

Fun Facts
- Future Emmy winner, Mike White (The White Lotus, School of Rock) appears as one of the partygoers.
- Jon’s character, Mike mentioned a Jedi mind trick. He ultimately joined the Star Wars universe as The Mandalorian’s showrunner.
- Trent has posters of “Taxi Driver” & “Reservoir Dogs.” Quentin Tarantino made bis directorial debut in the latter. He was in “From Dusk til Dawn” the exact same year Swingers came out.
- The film’s titled has nothing to do with group sex. It’s actually named after the swing music revival.
Random Thoughts
- I think Vince’s character, Trent was an inspiration for Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal as Tony Stark in the MCU.
- To spice things up a notch, how about a drinking game? Take a shot every time a character says money or baby. I’d stick to non-alcoholic beverages or water. I do not condone alcohol poisoning.
Mike’s chemistry with his pals serve as the main highlight.
Pacing felt natural for a 96-minute film.
Character Development involving Mike. As the film progresses, Trent and his pals help regain his happiness.
The Tone a has steady balance of seriousness and comedy. Something the worst comedies of 1996 I’ve listed lacked.
When Jon was on an episode of CNN’s mini-series, “The Nineties,” he mentioned Swingers is primarily influenced by Kevin Smith, Quentin Tarantino & Martin Scorsese.
Swing revival band, Big Bad Voodoo Dummy appears at a nightclub performing, “Go Daddy-O.”
Poor: The film’s a tad dated. The swing revival didn’t last long. It’s really not a fad anymore.
The Final Verdict: A-
Despite one drawback, Swingers is a well-written dramedy that’ll keep you glued to your screen. I think it should be included in The Criterion Collection. If you wanna keep yourself occupied before The Mandalorian and Grogu comes out, check out Swingers.
