Frozen

In 1937 after completing the groundbreaking animated movie, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” Walt Disney wanted to adapt Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen.” Due to a lack of resources at the time, Walt scrapped plans in favor of producing “Pinocchio.” Personally, I hated it. Despite cancelling a potential adaptation, Walt produced a live-action musical in 1952 based on Hans Christian Andersen’s life and career. Six Decades Later, Disney loosely adapted elements of The Snow Queen retitled as “Frozen.”

Released in 2013, (same year The Wolverine came out) Frozen earned positive reviews from critics and movie goers alike. Plus, it became the highest-grossing movie of 2013 beating “Iron Man 3.” Frozen became a cultural phenomenon. It won two Oscars for “Best Animated Feature” & “Best Original Song.” Thanks to its popularity, a sequel came out in 2019. I haven’t seen it. Anyway, Disney turns 100. Their most recent animated movie, “Wish” is already out. I’m planning on seeing it. When I saw a preview, it looks like a direct-to-DVD sequel produced 20 something years ago.

It doesn’t matter if SPOILERS are listed. Frozen’s either referenced or parodied in other works. Also, a source to Google memes.

Warm & Cold Aspects

Warm: Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff & Josh Gad all did a solid job for their respective voiceover performances.

Alan Tudyk (Mr. Nobody from Doom Patrol) voices the Duke of Weselton.

Animation looks gorgeous bringing elements to life such as character models, fluid movement, lighting and environmental locations.

Musical Numbers (except for Let It Go) are pretty good for your typical Disney animated musical.

Fun Fact 1: Remember that scene in “Deadpool 2” when Wade Wilson claims, “Do You Want to Build a Snowman” copied Barbra Streisand’s song, “Papa, Can You Hear Me” from Yentl?” Thanks, Deadpool for taking a potshot at Frozen.

Fun Fact 2: John Travolta mispronounced Idina Menzel’s name at the 86th Academy Awards. Thus, a meme is born.

In Summer’s my favorite song. Too bad it got overshadowed by the song everybody knows.

Anna’s interactions with Elsa, Olaf & Kristoff moves the story forward.

I’m glad Anna didn’t immediately hook up with Kristoff after rejecting Hans. It’s about gosh darn time Disney subverts the early romance trope. “Tangled” also dodged a bullet.

Anna & Elsa’s parents died in the sea. They’re confirmed to be alive in the sequel.

Olaf’s my favorite character. Josh mentioned Robin Williams’ Genie influenced his voiceover performance. He’s not a horrible comic relief like Skids & Mudflap from “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.”

A Post-Credits Scene is optional. Doesn’t set up Frozen II.

Cold: Although Jennifer Lee & Chris Buck manage to subvert the early romance trope, they didn’t do a good job.

At first, “Let It Go” is about Elsa unleashing her powers without concealing it to the public. Upon the movie’s release, the song was played non-stop. It was everywhere in commercials, YouTube videos, Demi Lovato performing a cover version, a bunch of people singing it. What’s worse, every time I tell someone to let it go. A random person interjects the conversation and sings. Due to the song’s annoyance, it deserves many points down as the worst Disney song ever made since the original Peter Pan’s “Following the Leader.” Best Original Song my butt! I’m shocked over Two Chainz & Wiz Khalifa’s “We Own It” from “Fast and Furious 6” got snubbed. It’s ten times legit. As if the Academy Awards sniffed Elsa’s farts. Let It Go, more like “Let It Blow!”

Sorry folks, I didn’t cry. Disney animated movies never made me cry. Except for these movies that managed to shed tears in my eyes.

  • Logan
  • Avengers: Endgame
  • Interstellar
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
  • Boys Don’t Cry
  • No Time to Die
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Hans isn’t an interesting villain. He’s not memorable as other antagonists from 2013 listed below. Hans’ the equivalent of stale bread.

  • Owen Shaw – Fast and Furious 6
  • Aldrich Killian – Iron Man 3
  • Khan – Star Trek Into Darkness
  • Alex – Prisoners
  • Chester – Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2
  • President Snow – The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

The Final Verdict: C, FOR CRAPCICLE!

I’m sorry, Frozen did not aged well. It’s one of the biggest disappointments of 2013 alongside “Man of Steel.” I don’t consider Frozen as the best Disney animated movie of the 2010s. My personal pick is “Big Hero 6.” As a movie goer and critic, I have to give movies tough love whether a certain one holds up or not. As most people say, “You can’t win ’em all.” A couple Disney animated movies are a hit and miss. Frozen’s not my favorite film of 2013, mine’s “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
