In 1984, singer/writer/comedian, Julie Brown (Minerva Mink from Animaniacs) released an Extended Play (EP for short) featuring five songs titled, “Goddess in Progress.” A parody of stereotypical valley girls and hit songs by Madonna, Cindi Lauper & Tiffany. Four Years Later, Julie co-wrote a script based on the EP, but with a trio of aliens named, Mac, Zeebo & Whiploc. After they crash land into a swimming pool, the aliens befriend Valerie. A manicurist having relationship issues with her fiancé. As the aliens repair the ship, they have “Fish Out of Water” moments posing as humans. The plot I’m talking about is none other than “Earth Girls Are Easy.”
Released in 1988, (same year Coming to America came out) it received mixed reviews and failed to generate revenue at the box office. Overtime, the movie gained a cult following for its quirky atmosphere. In 2001, a Broadway Musical based on the movie opened to the public with Julie Brown reprising her role as Candy. Britney Spears & Iggy Azalea made a music video inspired by the movie called, “Pretty Girls.”
Speaking of Musicals, the highly anticipated “Joker: Folie à Deux” will be released on October 4, 2024. Joaquin Phoenix & Lady Gaga will portray Joker & Harley Quinn. Before the sequel comes out, I’ve decided to watch various Musical films. Although I’m not a huge Musical fan, but I thought about spreading worth of mouth by posting specific ones. Joker: Folie à Deux counts. I’m doing this to supporting James Gunn’s upcoming DC Universe. By the way, Jeff Goldblum will play the Wizard in “Wicked.” A prequel to “The Wizard of Oz.” I have no intention seeing it. I got my eye on Mr. Phoenix & Ms. Gaga.

Easy & Hard Elements
Easy: Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum, Damon Wayans & Jim Carrey all did a decent job for their respective performances.
- Fun Fact 1: Damon & Jim later became cast members on “In Living Color.”
- Fun Fact 2: Geena & Jeff were also in “The Fly.” They were married. Then, they broke up. However, they’re in good terms as friends.
- Fun Fact 3: Molly Ringwald was considered for the female lead. She dropped out. Molly’s a has-been.
- Fun Fact 4: Jeff mentioned he didn’t want to play a blue character again. His character, Grandmaster from “Thor: Ragnarok” was rewritten as a human lookin’ guy. Perhaps, he felt uncomfortable wearing all that makeup in The Fly & Earth Girls Are Easy.
Julie Brown herself co-wrote the script. She also appears as Candy.
Prior to “Mars Attacks,” Earth Girls Are Easy pays tribute to ’50s sci-fi films about aliens.
Julien Temple (Juno’s real-life father) did a solid job directing.
Michael McKeen (Chuck McGill from Better Call Saul) appears as a surfer dude named, Woody.
Musical Numbers features intentionally cheesy, yet catchy songs as well as dancing.
Nile Rodgers orchestrated the soundtrack.
Humor has some hilarious moments that made me laugh. One part that made me laugh is when Zeebo & Whiploc recklessly drive a car that resembles the Family Truckster from “National Lampoon Vacation.”
Cinematography felt stable lacking technical issues.
Pacing didn’t feel like a drab.
Prosthetic Makeup transformed Jeff, Damon & Jim as the alien trio.
There’s a ton of scenes with Geena & Jeff showing some skin. A double standard for boys and girls. I’m immune to Geena. My biggest celeb crush is Scarlett “Scarjo.” Johansson. To paraphrase Nostalgia Critic having the hot for Catherine Zeta-Jones.” “I don’t care if your ex-husband is that schmuck from “Blade: Trinity.” ONE DAY YOU WILL BE MINE!”
Randy’s Donuts appears in one scene. It was also seen in “Iron Man 2.”
Hard: An early romance between Valerie & Mac happened way too soon. If this were real life, it’ll take a few weeks or a month for two people to get to know each other before a relationship is fully established. UGH! I hate an early romance!
You can tell this movie’s quite dated. Obviously, spells ’80s written all over it.
Product Placement featuring brands such as Coca-Cola, Wendy’s Oreo’s, Jell-O, M&M’s and Playboy.
The Final Verdict: B-
Earth Girls Are Easy isn’t a masterpiece or a stinker. It’s a silly, yet enjoyable at the same time for people who grew up in the ’80s. If you’re curious to see this cult classic, give it a shot.
