Salutations fellow movie goers from across the globe. Today’s editorial centers around my favorite films of 2018. For this list, I have picked each movie based on a acclaim, impact, box office, performances, memorable characters & narrative structure. Ladies & Gentlemen, here’s my “Top 12 Films Of 2018!” Why did I pick Top 12? Because I want to keep a step back from an extra number. The reason why want to share my list, is because “The 91st Academy Awards will air on ABC.

Top 12 Films Of 2018

12. Bohemian Rhapsody

Final Verdict: B, FOR BREAKTHRU

Box Office Revenue: $854,538,245

Rami Malek won a Golden Globe for “Best Actor In A Drama.”

This biopic film about the late Freddie Mercury & Queen became a sleeper hit among movie goers, but it earned mixed to positive reception from critics. Despite mixed reactions, Rami Malek earned critical acclaim for his performance as Freddie Mercury winning awards at “The Golden Globes,” “Screen Actors Guild,” (SAG for short) & “British Academy Film Awards.” BAFTA for short) Bohemian Rhapsody is nominated at “The 91st Academy Awards” for “Best Picture,” & “Best Actor.” Rami Malek)

When I first saw a preview of the movie, I was hyped to see a movie based on one of my favorite rock bands, rather than feeling skeptical about it. Rami did an excellent job for his performance, he deserves an Oscar for all that hard work researching Freddie’s backstory, watching music videos to match his dance moves as well as watching interviews to mimic his mannerisms. Other Cast Members also did a great job for their performances, a recreation of “Live Aid,” familiar tunes by the band, costume designs etc. If you’re interested in my fully detailed review of Bohemian Rhapsody, go ahead and check it out.

Besides Rami, Bohemian Rhapsody went on to win a Golden Globe for “Best Drama” at “The 76th Golden Globe Awards.” When The Oscars air, I hope Rami wins, he deserves it for all that hard work.

I bought my ticket to attend Adam Lambert & Queen’s concert. They’ll be here in Dallas on July 23rd. The day I’ll turn 26. Don’t forget to purchase an extended version of Bohemian Rhapsody’s Live Aid scene!

11. Annihilation

Final Verdict: A-

Box Office Revenue: $43,070,915

Natalie Portman as Lena, examining a sample of an alligator’s DNA.

When I first heard about Annihilation, I was psyched to see Natalie Portman on the big screen again. I have to admit, I wasn’t aware that Annihilation is part of a book trilogy called, “The Southern Reach Trilogy.” I never got a chance to watch it on the big screen due to a busy schedule, but I managed to watch it on Amazon Prime. At first, I thought Annihilation was gonna be a rip-off of Stargate or Atlantis: The Lost Empire, turns out it wasn’t a cheap knock-off yet a fresh sci-fi horror thriller lacking predictable cliches in most horror films. Natalie did an excellent job for her performance alongside Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson & Oscar Isaac. Although a box office flop, Annihilation earned positive reviews from critics. Former U.S. President Barack Obama listed it as one of his favorite films of 2018.

Director Alex Garland made a legit flick without making me feel miserably bored, special effects felt real using practical & C.G.I. to create a unique atmosphere, characters with an interesting backstories, among a few things you can find on my review for Annihilation. So far, Paramount has not yet revealed if there’s gonna be a two more installments of The Southern Reach Trilogy.

10. Ralph Breaks The Internet

Final Verdict: A-

Box Office Revenue: $507,119,090

Vanellope meets familiar Disney Princesses from past to present.

Disney’s Wreck-It-Ralph was a legit animated movie with an interesting story about a video game villain who wants to prove he’s a good guy trying to fit in. During his journey he befriends a girl from another video game who dreams of becoming a racer. After Wreck-It-Ralph was a hit, After six year gap of development, Disney released a sequel focusing on Ralph & Vanellope embarking on an adventure to save the latter’s world by traveling to The Internet for clues.

Like the first movie, Ralph Breaks The Internet told a good story fleshing out the duo’s friendship now put to the rest as they both suffer moral dilemma. Besides the narrative, John C. Reilly & Sarah Silverman both did an excellent job for their voiceover performances, the animation felt organic bring a world to life, familiar Easter Eggs makes you wanna pause your TV for all the juicy bits etc. For more info check out my review for Ralph Break The Internet on the positive elements listed.

The second film is nominated at for “Best Animated Feature” at “The 91st Academy Awards.” As both a critic & gamer, I actually liked it. If a third movie is in pre-production, they need to go further beyond The Internet by traveling to our world or something like The Matrix in a post-apocalyptic future. If so, I’m totally on board for a threequel.

9. Black Panther

Final Verdict: A-

Box Office Revenue: $1,346,913,161

Black Panther is the first live action Marvel film to earn an Oscar nomination for “Best Picture.”

After Wesley Snipes (also known as Blade) attempted to produce & star in a Black Panther movie since The Early 90’s to portray a superhero as a positive role model for black audience members, Marvel Studios finally fulfilled Wesley’s pet project starring Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther in his cinematic debut in Captain America: Civil War teaming up with Iron Man. A solo film about T’Challa came out during Black History Month.

The 18th installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU for short) earned critical acclaim for Chadwick Boseman & Michael B. Jordan’s performances as the hero & villain, visual effects, costume designs, Ryan Coogler’s direction, soundtrack, character development just to name a few. If you want more details check out my review for the movie. The King Of Wakanda became the highest grossing film in America with a whopping total of $700,000,000. Before & After the picture’s release, it instantly became a cultural phenomenon. Examples including Octavia Spencer bought a theater for kids to see T’Challa as a positive influence, Wesley Snipes stated that he liked the film, a “GoFundMe Page encouraged people to donate poor children from Harlem, New York & kids around the world shout-out T’Challa’s catchphrase, “WAKANDA FOREVER!”

Black Panther earned nominations for “Best Drama” & “Best Original Song” (All The Stars by Kendrick Lamar) at The 2019 Golden Globes. It’s about friggin’ time that The Oscar give a flying fudge about superhero films nominated for “Best Picture” after notable ones like Spider-Man 2, The Dark Knight, The Avengers, Guardians Of The Galaxy & Logan never got a chance to earn a shot. Black Panther alongside Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse are nominated at The Oscars.

8. Ready Player One

Final Verdict: A-

Box Office Revenue: $582,890,172

The gang are in the real world evading the bad guys.

Steven Spielberg’s career hasn’t slowed down. Like Ralph Breaks The Internet, Ready Player One revolves around online gaming connected to The Internet, think of it as a cross between Tron meets The Matrix. Steven became interested in Ernest Cline’s book, Ready Player One based on his passion of video games, he also created the video game series Medal Of Honor before Call Of Duty existed. He became an official gamer since Pong during the making of Jaws.

I’m gonna come clean y’all, I’ve never read the book, when I saw the flick, I was very satisfied as a gamer & critic. The Cast did a pretty darn job, Steven did an amazing job directing, visual effects brought the online world to life, characters from games, movies, anime & comics are present, Easter Eggs are all over the place it makes you wanna pause your TV, Steven honored Stanley Kubrick for the second time as he took over A.I. Artificial Intelligence, a track list of songs from The 80’s etc. If you want more info, check out my article for Ready Player One.

According to Ernest Cline, he’s working on a sequel to the book, he stated there’s a chance that it’s gonna be adapted on the silver screen. The Cast are contracted to return. No news from Mr. Spielberg to return as director has not been confirmed. I don’t know if he’s comin’ back due to development for a fifth Indiana Jones movie slated for a 2021 release date and he’s trying to get Harrison Ford to equip the whip and fedora.

7. A Star Is Born

Final Verdict: A-

Box Office Revenue: $423,733,198

Both Bradley Cooper & Lady Gaga earned critical acclaim for their performances.

When I learned that a remake of A Star Is Born was announced, my expectations were low, because how on Earth will you top Judy Garland’s classic movie from 1954? Upon a watching a trailer for the 2018 version, my attitude immediately changed when I saw Bradley Cooper & Lady Gaga performing on stage together. After I felt disappointed watching Venom, I went to see A Star Is Born if it lived up to the hype, turned it managed to keep me satisfied.

Prior to the film’s release, Sean Penn, Liza Minnelli ( Judy Garland’s real life daughter) & Barbra Streisand praised the 2018 version. Bradley & Gaga both did an incredible job for their performances, songs are very memorable, chemistry between the two leads were the main highlight, Bradley wrote and directed the picture based on his real life struggle as an alcoholic, Sam Elliott, Andrew Dice Clay & Dave Chappelle also did a good job as well, I can’t tell you the ending.

A Star Is Born won “Best Original Song” (Shallow by Lady Gaga) at “The 2019 Golden Globe Awards.” Gaga is nominated for “Best Actress” & “Best Original Song” at “The 91st Academy Awards.” I’m rooting for her to win either category. If she doesn’t win, I’m so gonna be devastated. This is one of the best remakes of all time besides John Carpenter’s The Thing, The Fly, 3:10 To Yuma, True Grit & Peter Jackson’s King Kong.

6. A Quiet Place

Final Verdict: A, FOR APEX

Box Office Revenue: $340,939,361

In addition to writing & directing, John Krasinski did a great job for his performance.

After The Office ended, John Krasinski wrote a script to show off his skills as a filmmaker recruiting his real life spouse Emily Blunt as his onscreen wife trying to protect their kids from aliens by not making noise, say a word out loud or step on something that’ll attract its attention. My expectations were low, because Michael Bay was involved as a co-producer. When I first saw the film, I was surprise that it turned out to be a legit horror movie. Way better than Truth Or Dare.

John Krasinski & Emily Blunt were amazing in the film, John also did good as a filmmaker, the tone masterfully developed a creepy atmosphere, scare factor was used effectively, my Suspension Of Disbelief was never broken, the stakes were high etc. If you want more info about the good stuff, check out my review for A Quiet Place.

A sequel is in development with John slated to direct & Emily will reprise her role.

5. Incredibles 2

Final Verdict: A, FOR APEX

Box Office Revenue: $1,242,785,241

Helen Paar/Elastigirl is about to kick some major butt.

After a 14 year hiatus, Brad Bird finally made a sequel to one of my favorite Pixar films. Incredibles 2 kept me entertained with the lead characters struggling to live as superheroes in a society as human beings, action scenes are fast paced, animation brought the world to life, comedy retained its style of humor, hilarity ensues when Mr. Incredible goes into a Mr. Mom phase after Elastigirl is recruited to go on missions among a few good elements. For more info, my review for Incredibles 2 is available.

Like the first film, Incredibles 2 earned critical acclaim from critics and movie goers alike. It is nominated at “The 91st Academy Awards” for “Best Animated Feature.”

4. Deadpool 2

Final Verdict: A, FOR APEX

Box Office Revenue: $785,046,920

Like the first film, Ryan Reynolds did a funny as heck job for his performance as Wade Wilson/Deadpool.

Fox’s R-rated Deadpool movie became a sleeper hit among critics & longtime fans of “The Merc With A Mouth” The success of Deadpool encouraged James Mangold to make a hard R Wolverine film titled, “Logan” which also earned critical acclaim as the best film in the X-Men series. Warner Bros. (WB for short) is working on an R-rated Joker movie inspired by Logan’s character driven storyline & Deadpool’s black comedy. Deadpool 2 retained its style of fourth wall breaking, mocking Deadpool’s infamous appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds & Josh Brolin both did an awesome job for their performances, the chemistry between Deadpool & Cable, etc. For more info, check out my Deadpool 2 review.

After Disney bought Fox, the former company will produce R-rated Deadpool films that won’t effect the nature of the character. I never got a chance to see Once Upon A Deadpool, someday I will when don’t have nothin’ on my plate. An extended cut for the sequel is currently available I strongly recommend it. I hope one of my favorite Marvel characters interacts with prominent figures from the MCU.

3. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

Final Verdict: A, FOR APEX

Box Office Revenue: $358,852,802

The Web Slingers gather up to save The Marvel Multiverse.

2018 is Spider-Man biggest year starting with Infinity War, a PlayStation 4 exclusive & an animated film. Unlike other entries focusing on Peter Parker, Miles Morales is the protagonist of Into The Spider-Verse & also his cinematic debut. Peter however, is Miles’ mentor who shows him what’s like to be a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Phil Lord & Chris Miller both did a amazing job directing, performances from the cast, animation is presented with a unique style resembling a comic book living and breathing, character development with the main leads, an unforgettable soundtrack etc. My review for this movie is available, if you’re interested in its strengths, go ahead and give it a read.Into The Spider-Verse went on to win a Golden Globe for “Best Animated Film” at The 2019 Golden Globes which is the first time Sony Animation one a Globe other then Disney & DreamWorks Animation. Spider-Verse is the best Spider-Man related movie since Sam Raimi’s second installment.

2. Mission Impossible: Fallout

Final Verdict: A, FOR APEX

Box Office Revenue: $791,115,104

Tom Cruise actually broke his ankle jumping from one building to another.

Similar to Jackie Chan, Tom Cruise is still pushing dangerous stunts without a stunt double. The Mission Impossible series remains as one of the biggest action film franchises keeping critics and movie goers invested for its premise, action sequences, dramatic stakes, Tom’s performance as Ethan Hunt just to name a few. For more info, go ahead and check out each Mission Impossible review I’ve uncovered.

Mission Impossible: Fallout is the best (if not the best) installment of the series since my personal favorite Ghost Protocol. Tom will reprise his role as Ethan Hunt in two more sequels slated to be released in 2021 & 2022. By the time part eighth comes out, Tom will turn 60. If Jackie Chan can perform dangerous action scenes, so can Tom.

1. Avengers: Infinity War

Final Verdict: A, FOR APEX

Box Office Revenue: $2,048,359,754

A great king once said: “WAKANDA FOREVER!”

After a decade of waiting for Marvel’s highly anticipated crossover event in the making, the MCU’s biggest film to date features our favorite heroes to prevent Thanos from collecting gems from previous installments that’ll grant him the power exterminate half the universe. As a lifelong fan of Marvel since Fox Kids, I felt incredibly satisfied to see the highest grossing film of 2018. Every single aspect ranging from performances from the cast, visual effects, chemistry between each hero, Josh Brolin’s portrayal as Thanos alongside his motivation, action scenes etc. If you to see the good parts listed from my review, feel free to read it.

Bravo Marvel for keeping us fanboys & fangirls patient by introducing non-fans to with your characters for their charisma, personality, motives, etc. I cannot wait to see Captain Marvel & Avengers: Endgame!
