Today’s review is what if our civilization rapidly declines our intelligence in the next five centuries. We become more stupid, lacking common sense, honesty, morals, and other qualities that represent good citizenship. The movie I’m referring to is “Idiocracy.” The movie was written and directed by Mike Judge, (Beavis & Butthead, King Of The Hill, Office Space) this was his second live action film after his cult classic film Office Space.
Idiocracy was released in 2006. (exact same year Babel came out) It didn’t make enough revenue at the box office and it also received mixed reviews from critics. A few years later, it became an instant cult classic on DVD & Blu-Ray.
Today’s review doesn’t contain no crucial SPOILERS whatsoever. Feel free to check out my non-spoiler article. Keep in mind, this is a short review, because Idiocracy ain’t an epic three hour movie.
Positive & Negative Elements
Positive: The Premise was interesting with its High Concept or What If Scenario.
The Opening starts in a strong way which sets the origins of dehumanizing intelligence. We witness the perpetrator responsible for the decline of human intelligence.
The Main Cast such as Luke Wilson, Maya Rudolph, Dax Shepard, Justin Long and Terry Crews as President Comacho, his character has a overly long ridiculous name. They all did a great job for their respective performances.
Cinematography never had any technical problems throughout.
The Humor is filled with jokes about stupidity and how it is affecting the planet. Lots of variations about stupidity without getting old.
Setting for the future takes place in 2505.
The Concept was inspired by H.G. Wells’ novel “The Time Machine” with a similar theme about the decline of human society.
An energy drink play a crucial role.
Tom Kenny has a voice over cameo as a computer with a filthy mouth. I bet Mike Judge watched the infamous Spongebob episode called “Sailor Mouth.” I would definitely pay my money to see a two hour staged play based on Sailor Mouth uncensored.
Satirical depiction of a Pepsi Co like company buying The U.S. Government as an asset.
Somebody is named, “Not Sure.” Again, Idiocracy pokes fun at unintelligent people.
The What If Scenario about our nation will possibly become dumber in the next 500 years. Let’s hope this doesn’t happen in real life.
Without giving anything away, a time machine plays a big role. It’s played for laughs towards the end.
I’m gonna give the Product Placement or Pee Pee, a pass because the brands are supposed to represent the U.S. becoming a sellout. Fuddruckers keeps getting its name changed, made me laugh so hard.
A Post-Credits Scene is optional. Doesn’t set up a sequel. You’re free to not waste your minutes watching The End Credits.
Negative: The Blue Screen Effect for certain background shots looked pretty fake. Let’s face it, the film’s budget was $2 million.
The Final Verdict: A-
I thought the movie was decent. Its best described as roasting a entire civilization of unintelligent people taking over our nation.
After the film’s release, various journalists compared The 2016 Presidential Election to the opening of Idiocracy. If Congress keeps choosing the wrong candidates, our county will become The Lowest Common Denominator. (L.C.D. for short) I hope his doesn’t happen and for the people across the globe.
If you haven’t seen this film, go ahead and give it a watch.
