Bound

After writing the script for “Assassin’s,” Lana & Lily Wachowski (formerly known as Larry & Andy) worked on their directorial debut titled, “Bound.” A neo-noir crime thriller about a gangster’s girlfriend named, Violet who has an affair with a female ex-con, Corky. Wanting to flee the mob world, Violet & Corky hatch a plan to snatch $2 million in the hopes of starting new lives. When the directing duo refuse to change Corky into a man from several movie studios, Dino De Laurentiis supported The Wachowskis’ vision and financed the project for approximately $6 million. Jennifer “J-Till” Tilly & Gina Gershon won the roles as Violet & Corky. Meanwhile, Joe Pantoliano signed on as the main antagonist, Caesar.

Released in 1996, (same year Resident Evil’s first game came out) it received praise at the 1996 Venice Film Festival. However, it was a commercial failure lacking revenue to pay off marketing deductions. Overtime, Bound gained a cult following. This film catapulted The Wachowskis’ careers as directors allowing them to direct the groundbreaking action sci-fi flick, “The Matrix.” Anyway, Bound turns 30. I have one good reason besides honoring the film’s milestone. Jennifer “J-Till” Tilly will reprise her role as Tiffany in a Chucky movie set after the TV’s third season. As of early 2026, details are kept under wraps.

Today’s review contains no SPOILERS. I’m giving you a chance to see this gem.

Strong & Weak Qualities

Strong: Jennifer “J-Till” Tilly, Gina Gershon & Joe Pantoliano all did an excellent job for their respective performances.

The Wachowskis both did a fantastic job directing their first film. They also co-wrote the script.

Don Davis (The Matrix Trilogy, Behind Enemy Lines) orchestrated the soundtrack.

Cinematography’s shot by Bill Pope.

Pacing didn’t feel like a slow burn. I was hooked right from the get-go.

Fun Facts

  1. Linda Hamilton was originally onboard as Violet. She dropped out.
  2. J-Till, Gina & Joe considered Bound as their best work. All three of ‘em reunited on an episode of “Chucky.” “Death on Denial” involves Tiffany posing as J-Till inviting Gina & Joe at her place.
  3. The Criterion Collection digitally restored the film in 4K on Blu-Ray as spine number #1220.

Random Thoughts

  1. First time I heard about Bound was in “Seed of Chucky.” J-Till as herself mentioned it during her conversation with Redman.
  2. I consider Bound to be J-Till & Gina’s best work. It would be awesome if they attend Fan Expo Dallas 2026 with Joe to celebrate the film’s 30th anniversary.

Chemistry between Corky & Violet serves as the main highlight.

According to The Wachowskis, they mentioned the film’s influenced by the works of Billy Wilder, (Double Indemnity, Sunset Boulevard) John Huston, (The Maltese Falcon, Key Largo) Clint Eastwood & Frank Miller. All four of ‘em are known for making crime drama.

If you own a Blu-Ray copy, The Wachowskis provide audio commentary reflecting development on the film.

Weak: I couldn’t find nothing wrong, I’m giving the cast and crew an Extra Point for making a flawless film as possible.

The Final Verdict: A, FOR APEX!

Bound is an underrated masterpiece that deserves more attention. I would’ve like to see Jennifer “J-Till” Tilly in other films like that. She has her own path as an expert poker player, voicing Bonnie Swanson on “Family Guy” and portraying Tiffany. Oh well. Can’t win ‘em all. If you’re curious to watch Bound, buy Criterion’s Blu-Ray copy. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
