“Weapons” is now streaming on HBO Max. The film came out on August 8, 2025. Zach Cregger’s latest film earned positive reviews and became a commercial success. I’m gonna come clean, I didn’t see Weapons when it first came out. I had to recoup my expenses from attending Fan Expo Dallas 2025. I’m on a tight budget when it comes to going to see a new movie. I’m only picking ones I desire to see. Anyway, Halloween Month is almost over. I’ll be watching and reviewing Horror films. Once Halloween’s over, I’ll be in Awards Seasons Mode selecting highly acclaimed films from past to present. By the way, Gladys from Weapons is getting a prequel spin-off like “Pearl” from “X.”
This review contains SPOILERS. If you’re somewhat interested in seeing Weapons, read at your own risk.
Loaded & Empty Aspects
Loaded: Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, (Ethan from Euphoria) Benedict Wong & Justin Long all did a decent job for their respective performances.
Cinematography’s shot in stable condition.
Death Scenes are solid.
Zach stated the film’s influenced by “Magnolia” & “Prisoners.”
Only good part I like is the chase scene with principal under Gladys’ influence.
George Harrison’s “Beware of Darkness” plays during the Opening Sequence.
The film’s told in non-linear format. Meaning, out of order similar to “Pulp Fiction.”
Empty: Zach Cregger (Barbarian) didn’t do a good job directing and formulating plot points in the script.
Pacing can be a drab at times. It pales in comparison to non-linear films like “Oppenheimer” & “Babel.”
Apparently Gladys is a witch who kidnaps children. I didn’t find Gladys scary. She looks like a redhead (actually wearing a wig) version of Amy Sedaris in “Strangers with Candy.” Why do people find Gladys intimating? The vampires from “Sinners” are legit scarier than this goofball.
Characters are forgettable. I didn’t care about a single one. They’re as boring and generic as heck. Like a person staring at wet paint on the wall waiting until it drys off.
Scare Factor didn’t give me the heebie jeebies. Wanna know how many Jump Scares are in this movie? Nine. Yep, it happened nine times. Nine times as in Ferris Buller who skipped class nine times. Ugh! I friggin’ hate Jump Scares.
A dream sequence feature a huge assault rifle floating above a house with 2:17 attached to the gun. I know it’s supposed to be a dream sequence, but it has to connect to the plot. Just random nonsense. Woody’s nightmare scene in “Toy Story 2”with him falling into a garbage represents Andy might possibly discard him due to a broken arm. A kids movie from 1999 told a better nightmare scene than this piece of crud!
The Final Verdict: D, FOR DINO DROPPINGS!
Sorry fellas, but Weapons is an overrated/overhyped Horror film that doesn’t deserve praise. I’m appalled many critics liked it. Well, I don’t. Never get hyped by a product. In the words of Tom from “Tom and Jerry,” DON’T YOU BELIEVE IT!” Skip Weapons in favor of Sinners. An actual good Horror film. I’m so glad I didn’t spend my money on Weapons. I think Gladys’ prequel is gonna flop big time. Zach Cregger’s next movie is “Resident Evil.” Oh, brother.
