When half of the universe’s population has been wiped out, Marvel’s heroes and villains band together to undo Thanos’ damage. They’ll need to remove “The Infinity Gauntlet” powered by six stones. Whoever wields to gauntlet shall obtain the power level of a god. Thus, the battle determines if the universe is saved or screwed.
The Infinity Gauntlet’s six issue storyline was officially published in 1991 around the same time Deadpool/Wade Wilson made his comic book debut. It received unanimous praise from critics, fans and readers alike. The mini-series spawned two sequels, “The Infinity War” and “The Infinity Crusade.” Thus, forming “The Infinity Trilogy.” As you know, plot elements from The Infinity Gauntlet were loosely integrated into the highest-grossing film of 2018, “Avengers: Infinity War” and the highest-grossing film of 2019, “Avengers: Endgame.”
Anyway, I’m reading and reviewing comic book crossover storylines featuring Marvel’s heroes and villains. Why? Obviously, I’m gearing up for “Avengers: Doomsday.” It’ll be released on December 18, 2026. Approximately a week before Christmas. This is gonna be one heck of an early Christmas present for me.
Today’s review contains no crucial SPOILERS.
Powerful & Weak Aspects
Powerful: Jim Starlin wrote all six issues. Made sure crucial plot elements were intact.
George Pérez & Ron Lim’s artwork is full of every single detail. Made my eyes glued to every panel. The former also created “The New Teen Titans” back in 1980.
Action Sequences captivates a grand scale battle with our heroes duking it out with Thanos. Giving ‘em a cinematic quality.
Many heroes and villains play big parts. Wolverine & Daredevil are my favorite Marvel heroes.
Random Thoughts
- Every time I read Doctor Doom’s dialogue, I can hear Robert Downey Jr.’s character, Wayne Gale from “Natural Born Killers.” To differentiate Iron Man/Tony Stark & Doom. The former speaks with an American accent. The latter speaks with an Australian accent. Once Avengers: Doomsday comes out, I’ll associate RDJ’s Latverian accent. For now, it’s the Australian accent.
- I haven’t read the follow-ups Infinity War & Infinity Crusade. I’ll read ‘em someday.
Pacing didn’t feel fast. There’s enough coverage on what’s going on switching a character’s Point of View (POV for short) in between.
Silver Surfer, Adam Warlock & Doctor Strange are considered to be the main protagonists of the storyline. They play crucial parts leading our heroes in combat. The trio’s chemistry serves as the main highlight.
Thanos’ motivation to obtain the Infinity Stones and wipe out half the universe is to win the heart of Death. In the words of Disney’s “Hercules,” “People do crazy things when they’re in love.” Thanos also believes wiping out half the universe is necessary to maintain balance. Thanos’ motivation is very different from the MCU.
Mephisto acts as Thanos’ loyalist. That’s right, The Devil of the Marvel Universe is an advisor for The Mad Titan. If you read all six issues, it makes perfect sense.
Thanos’ granddaughter, Nebula factors in. Her appearance is drastically different from her cinematic iteration. She isn’t a bald woman with robotic implants.
Primary Themes are Immortality, Betrayal, Genocide, Power, Consequence, Ambition & Self-Destruction. Each one’s handled maturely.
Weak: I couldn’t find nothing wrong. I’m giving the writer and artists an Extra Point for making a flawless storyline as possible.
The Final Verdict: A, FOR APEX!
The Infinity Gauntlet remains as one of Marvel’s biggest crossovers as well as one of the highly acclaimed storylines within the Marvel Universe. A big deal why Marvel Studios handpicked the storyline as the central conflict in Avengers: Infinity War & Avengers: Endgame. If you haven’t read The Infinity Gauntlet, it’s a must-read for MCU fans.
