Set one month after Invincible’s first season, Mark Grayson struggles to move on from knowing the truth about his father’s intention to conquer Earth and annihilate the human population. Mark also has a hard time balancing between his double life as a superhero and a college student. Meanwhile, in an alternate universe where Mark’s affiliated with Omni-Man ruling Earth with an iron fist, a brilliant scientist named, Angstrom Levy has the power to create portals to various universes has a vendetta with the good Mark.
Season 2 was split into two due to animators taking their time polishing the atmosphere and avoid competing against rival TV shows not associated with Amazon Prime. Part 1 streamed in 2023 and Part 2 streamed in 2024. Season 2 earned unanimous praise from critics, fans and streamers alike. All episodes of Season 3 are now streaming.
Today’s review contains no crucial SPOILERS.
Mighty & Weak Aspects
Mighty: The Cast from Season 1 reprise their roles and they all did a superb job for their respective performances.
Fun Fact: As part of Season 2’s marketing, J.K. Simmons reprised his role as Omni-Man in “Mortal Kombat 1.” Omni-Man’s a playable guest fighter along with Christopher Smith/Peacemaker, Homelander from “The Boys,” T-1000, Ghostface from “Scream” & Conan the Barbarian.
Newcomers to the series such as Sterling K. Brown & Daveed Diggs both did a decent job for their respective performances.
Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) did an awesome job mapping out all eight episodes.
Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg serve as executive producers. The former also voices space cop, Allen the Alien.
Animation brings many elements to life including character models, fluid movement and enviormental locations.
Action Sequences retain Season 1’s epic fights filled with ultraviolence. This isn’t your typical superhero cartoon for kids. In the words of the announcer from Adult Swim Action. “Put the kids to bed and get ready to get down.”
Angstrom’s kinda similar to Hulk’s foe, Leader. Both have an enlarged cranium and genius intellect.
Primary Themes are Purpose, Pacifism & Lineage. Each one’s handled carefully.
A few twist and turns will make you gasp.
Some episodes contain a Mid-Credits Scene.
Weak: I couldn’t find nothing wrong. I’m giving the cast and crew an Extra Point for making a flawless season as possible.
Episode 9 – Invincible: Atom Eve
I consider this episode as the Season Premiere. This hour-long prequel episode focuses on Atom Eve’s origin story.
An awesome fight scene in the highway.
The original Guardians of the Globe appear in the Cold Opening.
Episode 10 – A Lesson for Your Next Life
Angstrom Levy recruits the Mauler Twins to construct a device.
Radiohead’s “Karma Police” plays during the Opening Montage.
Resurrected by Cecil’s scientists, Immortal leads new members of the Guardians of the Globe. Bulletproof’s the new recruit. He’s voiced by former SNL cast member, Jay Pharaoh. The team have a hilarious battle with a giant red monster.
Episode 11 – In About Sixty Hours
Samantha tries to support her parents. Moments Later, she made an unfortunate accident.
A funny moment between Rex & Dupli-Kate.
The latest member of the Guardians of the Globe is a martian posing as a human astronaut. He calls himself, Shapesmith. He’s voiced by Ben Schwartz. Known for his performance as Sonic the Hedgehog. Shapesmith reminds me of Martian Manhunter from Justice League.
Mark’s sent to do two jobs. One, prevent Darkwing’s successor from killing criminals. Second, participate in a trial by combat. Darkwing has nothing to do with Darkwing Duck. Just a Batman copy.
Knowing the truth about Omni-Man’s purpose as a planet conquerer, Debbie struggles to move on.
Episode 12 – This Missive, This Machination
We learn Allen the Alien is the last of his kind.
I didn’t expect Peter Cullen (Optimus Prime) as the voice of Thadeus. Leader of the Collation of Planets or C.O.P. for short.
A brutal fight in space.
Mark travels to a bug planet.
Episode 13 – It’s Been a While
Mark reunites with Omni-Man. Prior to their reunion, the latter takes refuge on a bug planet. The former meets a “purple being.” Without giving anything away, I had a hard time comprehending on how the purple thing was made. If you know, you know.
Rhea Seehorn (Kim Wexler from Better Call Saul) voices a female bug alien.
Before and after the title card, a certain word got me crackin’ up.
Mark fights a Viltrumite who looks like Steve Harvey. This time, he doesn’t accidently pick the wrong model as Miss Universe.
Episode 14 – This Must Come as a Shock
Cecil’s right-hand man, Donald, learns a horrific truth.
Mark and the Guardians of the Globe go on a space mission to rescue an astronaut. I did not expect a rescue mission as to be brutal. I thought this was gonna be an easier one.
A bad guy yells, “UNLIMITED POWER!” A reference to Emperor Palpatine’s over-the-top quote from “Revenge of the Sith.”
A Mid-Credits Scene keeps getting better. The plot thickens.
Episode 15 – It’s Not That Simple
After an intense mission, Mark feels pressured dating Amber. He’s not the only one with dating issues. Peter Parker can’t be at two places at once. “With great power, comes great responsibility.”
Mark investigates Omni-Man’s books.
Allen has a hilarious fight scene.
Episode 16 – I’m Not Going Anywhere
When Mark meets a comic book artist/writer art Comic Con, he talks about why animation takes a very long time to complete. An inside joke regarding Invincible’s lengthy production. “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” took the animators approximately five years to finish.
Speaking of Spider-Man, Rex shoots an explosive like Spidey shooting his web.
Mark encounters a female Viltrumite named, Anissa. She’s voiced by Shantel VsnSanten. Known for her role as Becca Butcher from “The Boys.”
Random Thought: I have never been to San Diego Comic Con. It’s my dream to attend. However, I attended Fan Expo Dallas twice in 2023 and 2024. I got plans to go this year. I can’t wait to take my picture with Walton Goggins. He’s my favorite character actor.
Episode 17 – I Thought You Were Stronger
Mark engages in combat with Angstrom. All it needs is some Hans Zimmer’s “Man of Steel” battle music. I’ll sum up the battle in two words. HOLY CRAP!
Angstrom has flashbacks of his past.
A shocking moment will make you gasp. Unlike “The Last of Us Part II,” it was done maturely in terms of morality. I’m giving Steven Yeun a ton of Bonus Points for pulling off an emotional performance. I wish the Golden Globes and Emmy Awards made a category for “Best Voiceover Performance.”
Two explorers are voiced by Ella Purnell & Chole Bennett.
An unpredictable reveal towards the end.
A Mid-Credits Scene sets up Season 3.
The Final Verdict: A, FOR APEX!
Invincible’s second season kept me entertained. I didn’t expect it to me another top-tier season. If you’re not caught up on Season 2, watch all eight episodes plus Atom Eve’s special right now.
