In 1980, former con man, Frank Abagnale Jr. published a semi-autobiographical book titled, “Catch Me If You Can.” Loosely based on Frank’s life, his parents split resulting in him running away from home. Motivated to get his parents back together, Frank seeks to obtain money forging checks, pretending to be a pilot, doctor and prosecutor. His swindling gets the FBI’s attention.
Seventeen Years Later, Steven Spielberg became fascinated with Frank’s life story. Filmmakers considered to direct were Gore Verbinski, David Fincher & Cameron Crowe. They dropped out in favor of other projects. Steven took over directing duties. Leonardo “Leo” DiCaprio (my all-time favorite actor) signed on to portray Frank along with Tom Hanks as FBI agent, Carl Hanratty.
Released in 2002, (same year The Bourne Identity came out) the film became a critical and commercial success. Christopher Walken & John Williams were nominated for “Best Supporting Actor” and “Best Original Score.” Merry Christmas fellow movie goers. As a token to celebrate holidays, I wanna share my thoughts on this gem. I consider Catch Me If You Can as a Christmas movie. Mark your calendars on upcoming films.
- Leonardo DiCaprio will star in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Battle of Baktan Cross.” August 8, 2025
- Tom Hanks will reprise his role as Woody in “Toy Story 5.” June 19, 2026
- Steven Spielberg’s next film’s titled, “The Dish.” Coming in 2026.
This review contains no crucial SPOILERS. I’m giving you a chance to see this modern masterpiece
Rich & Poor Aspects
Rich: Leonardo “Leo” DiCaprio & Tom Hanks both did an excellent job for their respective performances.
Other Cast Members such as Christopher Walken, Martin Sheen and then unknown Amy Adams all did a decent job for their respective performances.
Elizabeth Banks, Jennifer Garner and then unknown Ellen Pompeo make brief appearances.
Steven Spielberg did a great job directing. He also produced the film.
John Williams orchestrated the soundtrack.
- Fun Fact 1: Opening Credits was later spoofed in The Simpsons episode, “Catch ‘Em If You Can.”
- Fun Fact 2: Mac Miller (may he Rest in Peace) mentioned the film in, “What’s The Use?” “Catch Me If You Can, but you’ll never catch me, damn.”
- Fun Fact 3: Leo later played a con man in another biographic film, “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
- Fun Fact 4: Leo was also in another critically acclaimed film in 2002, “Gangs of New York.” Both films saved his career after “The Man in the Iron Mask” & “The Beach” earned divisive reactions.
Although a semi-autobiographical film, there’s some funny moments.
Pacing didn’t feel like a drab. I was hooked from start to finish.
Cinematography didn’t suffer from any technical problems.
Costume Designs and Set Pieces recreate the 1960s.
Frank’s fake names are Barry Allen & Dr. Connors. Referencing The Flash and Spider-Man villain, Dr. Curt Connors/Lizard. Frank’s a comic book fan. It’s funny because Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man came out in 2002.
Opening Credits foreshadows scenes from the film.
One scene with Frank watching “Goldfinger” and buys an Aston Martin DB5. James Bond’s film series turned 40 around the same time Catch Me If You Can came out. Plus, Die Another Day was released as well. Bond’s theme played when Frank drives Bond’s signature car. Mr. Spielberg’s a fan of the Bond films.
Again, I consider Catch Me If You Can as a Christmas movie. There are decorations, Christmas lights and a holiday tune. Frank shouts, “Merry Christmas!”
Towards the end of the film, texts reveal what Frank’s been doing for a living.
Poor: I couldn’t find nothing wrong. I’m giving the cast and crew an Extra Point for making a flawless film as possible.
The Final Verdict: A, FOR APEX!
Catch Me If You Can’s an amazing film definitely worth your spare time. If wanna watch something different during the holiday season, give this one a shot.
