Flashback Review: Scooby-Doo and the Witch’s Ghost

Following the critical and commercial success of “Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island,” Warner Home Video produced more direct-to-video movies on Scooby-Doo going on further mysteries. This one’s called, “Scooby-Doo and the Witch’s Ghost.” Mystery Inc. are invited by a horror writer named, Ben Ravencroft. Suddenly, the group investigate a rumor on a Ravencroft’s ancestor’s a ghost roaming around town.

Released in 1999, (same year The Iron Giant came out) it received mixed reviews from critics and became a hit on home video. I remember owning a VHS copy of Witch’s Ghost when I was a kid. I used to own VHS copies of Zombie Island, Alien Invaders & Cyber Chase. Anyway, it’s Halloween Month. I’ll be watching and reviewing some spoofy stuff. Which one should I review next? Lifted & Cursed Aspects

Lifted: Voice Actors all did a great job for their respective performances.

Tim Curry did a decent job for his voiceover performance. Near the end, he hams up his performance. Tim’s known for his hammy acting.

Jennifer Hale voices The Hex Girls lead singer, Thorn. She did a decent job for her performance.

Fun Fact: Tim’s a huge Scooby-Doo fan. At first, he was considered for a role in the 2002 live-action film. Tim dropped out upon learning Scrappy-Doo’s in it. UGH! What’s with all the Scrappy hate? He’s ain’t that bad.

Animation retains Zombie Island’s detailed work. Allowing animators more time to polish frame by frame.

Witch’s Ghost doesn’t repeat the show’s formulaic structure. An actual ghost isn’t a guy in a mask.

The Hex Girls make their first appearance. They became fan favorites. The goth rock equivalent of Josie and the Pussycats. They’re ok. I’m appalled Scrappy doesn’t any appreciation from the fans. Screw the haters. Scrappy deserves respect, not scrutiny. Still no Ghoul School spin-off. We already got countless Scooby-Doo movies and cartoons. WB, throw me a friggin’ bone.

Funny Moments in between like Scooby & Shaggy eating a lot and Fred has the hots for Thorn with Daphne giving him that dirty look.

Cursed: Billy Ray Cyrus performs the show’s theme song. Ugh! His music sucks. No wonder Miley & Noah are an embarrassment just like their dad.

Running Time’s 66 minutes long. Not enough to qualify as an animated film ranging from 70-90 minutes long.

Trailers for the movie accidentally gave away the big reveal. Other trailers accidentally gave away crucial details in movies. OOPS! By the way, the plot twist’s a rehash of Zombie Island.

The Final Verdict: B-

Scooby-Doo and the Witch’s Ghost isn’t the best. Just plain average. If you wanna introduce your kids to early direct-to-video movies of Scooby-Doo, your call. Will somebody at WB please make a Scrappy spin-off? Heck, maybe The Great Gazoo from “The Flintstones?” I wanna know more about his backstory.
