Gamer’s Review: Lego Marvel Super Heroes

“Lego Marvel Super Heroes” was officially released in 2013 (same year The Last of Us came out) on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U & Nintendo Switch. It received positive reviews from critics, fans and gamers alike. Besides praise, the game sold millions of copies worldwide. Traveler’s Tales later developed two Marvel games “Lego Avengers” based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU for short and a sequel “Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2.”

I have two reasons why I wanna share my thoughts on the first game. The highly anticipated “Deadpool and Wolverine” set in the MCU, will be released on July 26, 2024. Three days before my birthday. Insomniac Games is working on a Wolverine video game. As of May 2024, no release date has been confirmed.

Today’s review contains no SPOILERS whatsoever.

Good & Evil Qualities

Good: Voice Actors including my all-time favorite voice actor, Nolan North all did a superb job for their respective voiceover performances.

Graphics are really good.

Humor has lighthearted funny moments.

Gameplay/Mechanics

  • Presented as a third-person single-player/co-op action-adventure open-world game, you play as heroic characters trying to stop Loki from building a cosmic item made from Silver Surfer’s board that’ll summon a powerful threat, a planet eater named, Galactus. The heroes must retrieve a few cosmic bricks before it’s too late. The game retains core elements from previous Lego games.
  • Upon completing a level, you can go back in Free Play allowing you to switch multiple characters collecting all ten mini-kits.
  • Earn studs spending new characters, vehicles and Deadpool bricks.
  • Deadpool bricks are similar to the red bricks from other Lego games. Enabling one, can multiply how much studs you get.
  • Certain characters are required to bypass puzzles or obstacles. For example, Cyclops fires his optic blasts to heat gold metal.
  • Main Story contains 15 Missions There are 11 Bonus Missions. Racking up a grand total, 26.
  • Base game features 155 characters. Installing eight DLC characters gives you 163. More bang for your buck.
  • There are 250 gold bricks scattered across New York City and levels.
  • A specific number of gold bricks are required to unlock a Bonus Mission. Beating every single one unlocks Deadpool.
  • Create a custom character located in the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier.
  • Stan Lee takes over the “citizen in peril” from the Lego themed Batman and Harry Potter games. After saving Stan 50 times, you unlock him. He’s got all the powers and abilities. EXCELCIOR!

Characters I played the most. Venom, Loki, Deadpool, Rocket Raccoon, Punisher, Gambit, black suit Spider-Man and my all-time favorite, Wolverine.

Magneto uses his magnetic powers to use the Statue of Liberty. Reminds me of “Ghostbusters II” when the heroes use Lady Liberty in order to stop Vigor’s plan from possessing Dana’s baby.

Wolverine mentioned he visited the Statue of Liberty once. A reference to the first X-Men movie. He fought Mystique & Sabretooth. Coincidentally, Hugh Jackman reprised his role in “The Wolverine.” A huge improvement of that horrendously bad prequel, “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”

The game’s a mix of MCU’s Phase One and comics. Imagine if Marvel Studios, Sony & Fox (before Disney bought it) collaborated bringing every hero and villain together in the first Avengers movie? What do you get? The world’s longest movie ever made. Boy, the budget would top “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” as the most expensive movie worth a billion.

It took me two weeks to finish the game on 100%. Not too shabby.

Guardians of the Galaxy are playable. They’re based on the comics. This is before James Gunn introduced a new batch of fans in 2014.

A Mid-Credits Scene sets up the second game.

Evil: I couldn’t find nothing wrong. I’m giving Traveler’s Tales an Extra Point for making a flawless game as possible.

The Final Verdict: A, FOR APEX!

Lego Marvel Super Heroes is the best Lego game based on Marvel. I had a blast playing as my favorite characters. If you wanna spend time with your kids or hang out with your friends, this is a game for Marvel fans like me. Which Marvel themed game is your favorite? Mine’s “Marvel Ultimate Alliance.” If Traveler’s Tales is working on another Lego Marvel game, I want a game based on “The Infinity War Saga.” It would be a dream come true.
