Flashback Review: YuYu Hakusho: Dark Tournament Saga

In 2002, Adult Swim introduced viewers to an anime titled, “YuYu Hakusho.” It became an instant hit. Set after the Spirit Detective Saga, a powerful demon named, Younger Toguro (looks like The Terminator) invites Yusuke Urameshi and his allies in a tournament to compete against each other while fighting matches with tough competitors. Yusuke and his friends will need all the help they can get. I already covered history surrounding the show’s humble beginnings. So, don’t forget to check out my non-spoiler review on the Spirit Detective Saga.

YuYu Hakusho’s second season known as the “Dark Tournament Saga” officially aired in 2003 (same year Oldboy came out) on Cartoon Network’s block Toonami. It earned positive reviews from critics and viewers alike. Only 28 episodes aired in 2003. The rest of ’em finally aired a year later. In order to cater to younger viewers, violence, risqué humor and swearing was toned down. Thankfully, Funimation retained core elements on DVD/Blu-Ray. I used to watch YuYu Hakusho all the time on Adult Swim & Cartoon Network. Back when Cartoon Network was at its prime.

My Hero Academia’s highly anticipated seventh season will air on May 4, 2024. Which is “Star Wars Day.” A fourth movie, “My Hero Academia: World Heroes” will be released on August 2, 2024. As an anime enthusiast, I wanna share my thoughts on my favorite story arc from YuYu Hakusho.

This review contains no SPOILERS. I’m giving y’all a chance to watch this classic gem.

Strong & Weak Aspects

Strong: Voice Actors reprise their roles. They all did a superb job for their respective voiceover performances.

Animation still holds up for a classic anime.

Action Sequences are really good. The matches between our heroes squaring off with powerful opponents are the best parts. Besides my favorite character, Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama and fan favorite, Hiei, have their great moments. Their powers have increased since last time.

Humor has a bunch of funny moments. Gotta love Yusuke’s trash talk and bragging with his friends. One part that made me laugh is when Yusuke slaps somebody a thousand times.

Pacing didn’t take forever. Kept me invested.

Yusuke’s chemistry with his allies serves as the main highlight.

Sean Schemmel (Goku and King Kai) provides the voice of Roto. A competitor who sheathes a scythe on his arm.

Not really a spoiler, we’re introduced to Puu. He’s an odd lookin’ blue penguin with “Dumbo” ears. Turns out he’s Yusuke’s spirit beast who represents his inner self. Regardless of Yusuke’s rebellious personality and love for fighting, he’s actually has redeeming qualities. He cares about his love interest, Keiko, bestie, Kuwabara and mentor, Genkai.

My favorite moment from the entire series is when Puu senses Yusuke enduring intense pain after absorbing an orb that’ll make him stronger to fight Younger Toguro. At first, Yusuke didn’t like the blue furball. When he sees Puu trying to give him water, he begins to care about him. Then, he breaks down in tears realizing his inner self represents the good underneath his tough guy exterior. As the cave collapses, Yusuke overcomes his pain using his power and rescues Puu from being crushed by a huge rock.

Now about the aforementioned scene with Yusuke & Puu, it made me cry when the former develops a soft spot after nearly dying from absorbing the orb. Justin Cook deserves Bonus Points for his dramatic acting chops as well as a big reason why he instantly became one of my favorite actors. It’s a shame Mr. Cook never voiced another lead character after YuYu Hakusho. He only voices supporting character while busy as a producer organizing other anime shows.

2003 was a trend for angry characters. Yusuke isn’t the only hothead.

  • Raphael – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2003
  • Dave Buznik – Anger Management
  • Wolverine – X2: X-Men United
  • Ang Lee’s Hulk
  • Raven – Teen Titans 2003
  • Stitch – Stitch the Movie
  • Homer Simpson – The Simpsons: Hit and Run
  • Jak – Jak II
  • Tasmanian Devil, Yosamite Sam & Marvin the Martian – Looney Tunes: Back in Action
  • Willie – Bad Santa
  • Goku & Vegeta – Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2
  • Gimli – The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

An important character dies. I can’t tell you the name. You’ll have to see for yourself.

The Dark Tournament Saga explores backstories of specific characters such as Genkai & Younger Toguro.

The battle between Yusuke & Younger Toguro is worth the wait. An emotional and physical rollercoaster for our hero facing his toughest foe yet.

Weak: I couldn’t find nothing wrong. I’m the Dark Tournament Saga an Extra Point.

The Final Verdict: A, FOR APEX!

YuYu Hakusho: The Dark Tournament Saga is perhaps the best story arc in the series. I had fond memories of the show growing up. Man, I miss my childhood. If you haven’t seen this timeless classic, watch the entire series from start to finish. You’ll thank me later.
