“Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance” was officially released in 2015 (same year Fallout 4 came out) on PlayStation 4. It received positive reviews from critics and gamers alike. Two Years Later, the game was later re-released on the aforementioned and Nintendo Switch under “Disgaea 5 Complete” along with every single DLC in one package. I’ll have you know, the fifth game is my introduction to the Disgaea series. A follower on my Discord account recommended this game. So, I bought the complete edition for a discount on the PlayStation Store. I had a blast indulging myself for nearly an entire month beating the main story. Perhaps, someday I’ll buy the sixth and seventh game.

Powerful & Weak Qualities
Powerful: Voice Actors all did a superb job for their respective performances. If you’re a fan of “Eureka Seven, “Naruto,” or “Bleach,” Stephanie Sheh provides the voice of Liezerota. She’s known for voicing Eureka & Orihime. Eureka Seven is one of my favorite shows. By the way, Ms. Sheh’s my all-time favorite voice actress.
Graphics depict the world, characters and environment in 2D format. Similar to an anime series.
Gameplay/Mechanics
- Presented as a turn-based tactical JRPG game, you play as Killia, his allies and units of his army. Each stage limits a total of ten characters on the field.
- Each character has a specific Evility. A unique version acts as a permanent buff. Common ones can be spent with mana.
- A meter known as, Revenge System fills up whenever a member of your party dies, a surviving member unleashes his/her ultimate ability. Enabling it triggers the cost of skills reduced to one.
- Spend money on weapons, armor and food.
- Stages occasionally have a field advantage/disadvantage.
- Color coded Geo Effects affect a unit. Landing on a spot like a 50% defense bonus increase a unit’s defense. Excuse the redundancy.
- Combat never gets old. You pick a target using melee or ranged attacks. Combining units to hit a target deals damage. Skills on the offense really come in handy. If two unique characters are together, they can unleash a powerful skill combo. If you lift all your units forming a tower, they can combine their strength with a legit team attack. Sometimes you gotta think outside the box.
- You can increase your gear in the Item World. Depending on the item’s stats, you’ll face stronger opponents if you select item on high level. If its low level, enemies are weak. As you progress, foes will become stronger.
- As you progress, you get squads. Assigning units in a team enables bonuses. For instance, adding a couple team members in Skill Training Squad increases Skill XP. Try experimenting different types.
- Reincarnation restarts a character to level 1. However, a selected character becomes stronger by increasing base stats. You can do this anytime if you wanna beef up your units again.
- Dark Assembly gives you many options to approve a bill whether it’s acquire a temporary boost or get a new squad. If you manage to bribe senators, you’ll get an approval. If you don’t they’ll reject it. Save a bunch of money to pay up.
- Spend mana to upgrade your skills.
- Level Cap is ridiculously high. Maximum level is 9999. Not kidding. Cue, Vegeta’s line… “IT’S OVER 9000!”
- Cheat Shop gives you options to increase or decrease XP, Skill Points, Money, Weapon Mastery & Mana.
Humor has some funny moments that gave me a chuckle.
Main Story focuses on a demon named, Killia. His goal is to create an army recruiting demon overlords to prevent Dark Void from conquering multiple worlds.
Killia’s chemistry with his allies serve as the main highlight.
There’s a total of 47 fully customized non-unique classes. I named a few of them after characters from other works.
- Gunslinger – Spike Spiegel (Cowboy Bebop)
- Dragon King – Baron O’ Beef Dip (Ed, Edd n Eddy)
- Imp – Tyrion Lannister (Game of Thrones)
- Martial Artist – Frank Martin (The Transporter series)
- Rabbit – Mirko (My Hero Academia)
- Orc – Lurtz (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy)
- Sage – Coraline
Disgaea 5 Complete contains all DLC characters from previous games. Adding further replay value. In order to unlock ’em, you have to beat three stages within a story.
A few twists and turns change the trajectory of the story.
Bloodis is my favorite character. He looks like Darth Vader. By the way, he’s an unlockable character.
It took me 130+ hours to beat the main story. After beating beat, you can go back and replay the story. That doesn’t stop you from carrying all your skills and abilities.
You don’t have to play previous games. Every single one is its own thing.
Besides the main story’s real ending, you get multiple endings depending on your choices.
Weak: I couldn’t find nothing wrong. I’m giving Nippon an Extra Point for making a flawless game as possible.
The Final Verdict: A, FOR APEX!
Disgaea 5 Complete is one of the longest games I’ve ever played. I’m glad I didn’t waste my money on “Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League.” Disgaea 5 Complete is definitely worth every penny. Which JRPG should I review next? Please leave a comment.
