Argylle

Your mission, should you choose to see this spy comedy in theaters or wait a few months for it to stream on Apple TV Plus? If I were you, I choose to see it on the big screen. Matthew Vaughn’s latest movie, “Argylle” is out in theaters. It received negative reviews from critics. Argylle’s the first movie I have seen in 2024. It’s a warm-up before this year’s batch of films come out around Spring, Summer & Fall. Which one’s are you psyched to see? Please leave a comment.

Today’s review contains no SPOILERS.

Smart & Deadbeat Qualities

Smart: Byrce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Samuel L. Jackson, Sofia Boutella, Ariana DeBose, Henry Cavill & John Cena all did a superb job for their respective performances.

Fun Fact: Henry also appeared in other spy movies including “Mission Impossible: Fallout” & “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” He will also appear in another one this year known as “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.”

Matthew Vaughn did a solid job directing.

Action Sequences are over-the-top filled with awesome fight scenes. My favorite one has got to be the one with colorful smokescreen. If you’ve seen it, you probaly know what I’m talkin’ about. Definetly earns Bonus Points worth the price of admission.

Humor has some legit funny moments that made me laugh.

Cinematography didn’t have any technical problems throughout.

Chemistry between Ellie & Aidan serves as the main highlight. The latter’s jerky but noble personality reminds me of Spike Spiegel from my all-time favorite TV show, “Cowboy Bebop.”

Character Development involving Ellie.

Like “The Lost City,” Argylle’s inspired by “Romancing the Stone.” Thankfully, it’s not a rip-off. Hear me out, The Lost City’s pretty good.

A Plot Twist changes everything. I can’t tell you all about it. You’ll have to see for yourself.

The Beatles’ recent final song “Now and Then” is often played. Matthew’s a Beatles fan like me. Peter Jackson digitally restored the song like he did with his documentary series, “The Beatles: Get Back.” I tolerate The Beatles over Ice Spice’s song about farts. For those who don’t know, it’s called, “Think U the “S**t.” (Fart) Not kidding.

Dua Lipa & Richard E. Grant make brief appearances.

Deadbeat: C.G.I. is often fake. Archie the Cat looks odd like an unrendered PS4 character.

The Third Act drags a bit longer. The aforementioned colorful smokescreen fight scene saved it. So, I’ll subtract this con.

A ridiculous battle scene regarding “ice skating” in oil. If this were real life, I don’t think the combatant would easily use knives for skates.

A Mid-Credits Scene felt unnecessary.

The Final Verdict: B-

Even though Argylle’s not a masterpiece or a stinker like “The Master of Disguise.” It was alright. If you’re into fun spy comedies or looking for something to keep yourself entertained, now’s the time to take your girlfriend on a date during Valentine’s Day. Hopefully, 2024 will be a better year for movies. Ignore the critics and have a good time. Do not blow your money on “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.” You’ll thank me later.
