“My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising” was officially released in 2020. (same year Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla came out) The second movie of “My Hero Academia” earned positive reviews from critics, fans and movie goers alike. Plus, it made enough revenue at the box office. A third movie, “World’s Heroes’ Mission” was released a year later. A fourth movie is currently in development. As of late 2023, no release date has been confirmed. I already wrote an article on “Two Heroes.” So, don’t forget to check it out. One more thing, a free-to-play game, “My Hero Ultra Rumble” is out. I’m currently on Season 6.
Today’s review contains no SPOILERS. Feel free to read my non-spoiler article.
Strong & Weak Aspects
Strong: Voice Actors from the show reprise their roles and they all did an excellent job for their respective voiceover performances.
Johnny Yong Bosch (Ichigo Kurosaki from Bleach) did a decent job for his voiceover performance as Nine.
Animation brings certain elements to life including character models, fluid movement, lighting and environmental locations creating an immersive world.
Action Sequences display a character’s unique power known as a “quirk.”
Humor has some Funny Moments that made me laugh.
Nabu, the name of the island, is named after Naboo from “Star Wars.”
Set between Season 5 story arcs “Joint Training” & “Meta Liberation Army,” the second movie centers on Deku, Kacchan & Class 1-A made to their Winter semester. They’re sent to an island running a temporary agency involving low-threat missions. Deku befriends two kids named, Katsuma & Mahoro. Suddenly, Nine seeks to extract a Katsuma’s quirk in order to fully cure himself from a deadly disease.
Deku’s chemistry with Kacchan, Katsuma & Mahoro serves as the main highlight.
We learn about Katsuma & Mahoro’s lives. The former’s quirk makes perfect sense. I can’t give it away. You’ll have to see for yourself.
Tip: Before you watch Heroes Rising, watch Joint Training first, then resume Season 5.
Nine’s the main antagonist. He has nine quirks which makes him dangerous. Kinda reminds me of Super Skrull from “Fantastic Four.” We learn about his background. He’s much tougher than the previous bad guy, Wolfram. Nine also has back-up. Thus, raising the stakes.
Class 1-A students have their awesome moments in battle.
As I’ve mentioned on my previous reviews, Kirishima, Tsu, (pronounced as Sue) Mineta, Jiro & Tokoyami are my favorite characters. Tsu slightly has more screen time than her cameo in Two Heroes.
The Climatic Battle will make your jaw drop. I’m giving it Bonus Points as the best part.
Weak: If you’re lost over certain plot elements never addressed in Season 5. Heroes Rising came out months before the aforementioned season. Thankfully, I managed to watch Season 5 and Heroes Rising in chronological order. So, I’ll let this flaw slide.
The Final Verdict: A, FOR APEX!
I used to think Onward’s my favorite animated movie of 2020, but now I consider My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising as my number one pick. Also, my second favorite movie of 2020. Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” takes the top spot. Don’t get me wrong, Onward’s flawless. If you’re caught up after Joint Training arc, watch the second movie. Then, resume Season 5. I can’t wait for the fourth movie.
