Bandai Namco’s Godzilla was officially released in 2015 (same year The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt came out) on PS4. It was critically panned by critics, fans and gamers alike. Due to a lack of selling copies, Bandai Namco digitally delisted Godzilla.
Anyway, I have three reasons why I wanna review Godzilla on PS4.
- Warner Bros. & Legendary Pictures are working on a follow-up to “Godzilla vs. Kong” called, “Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire” with the two giants teaming up against a powerful foe. Their blood feud dating back many years ago, will also be explored. The sequel will be released on April 12, 2024.
- A live-action TV series, “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” will star Kurt Russell and his son, Wyatt playing an older and younger version of a member of the titular organization who’s tied to Godzilla and other Kaiju. Think of it as “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” with giant monsters. The show will stream on November 17, 2023 exclusively on Apple TV.
- Outside the MonsterVerse, Toho’s upcoming “Godzilla: Minus One” will be released on December 1st, 2023. This time, the movie will take place in post-World War II Japan with the character doing his usual schtick. Going on a rampage yadda yadda yadda.
Powerful & Weak Qualities
Powerful: Character Models retain Godzilla’s appearance along with his allies and foes.
You play a total of 14 characters. Some of them have alternate variants from a specific era.
- Godzilla (Showa, Heisei, Burning, Legendary/2014 American reboot)
- King Ghidorah (Showa, Heisi)
- MechaGodzilla (Showa, Heisei, Kiryu/Millennium)
- Mothra (Larva and Full Form)
- Battra (Larva and Full Form)
- SpaceGodzilla
- Mecha-King Ghidorah
- Anguirus
- Jet Jaguar
- Gigan
- Destroyah
- Biollante
- Hedorah
- Rodan
Weak: Graphics are butt ugly like Godzilla 1998. Draw Distance and Skybox pales in comparison to “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.”
Level Design looks cheap. Bandai Namco didn’t put any effort to make a definitive Godzilla game. As if “Ed, Edd n’ Eddy” made this game for a quick buck to get jawbreakers, rather than doing this for the fans.
God of Destruction Mode involves Godzilla making his way to destroy a generator for a limited amount of time. It gets repetitive like an episode of “Power Rangers” doing the same plot without any variation whatsoever. You complete God of Destruction Mode within an hour. That’s right, an entire hour.
Although a Kaiju game with a monster roaming a city, it ain’t presented as an open-world game like “The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction.” Invisible walls prevent you from exploring.
Remember Angry Joe’s review on the game? He couldn’t stand an operator repeating “Godzilla is approaching the generator!” “The generator is losing power!” This caused him to go cuckoo for Coca Puffs. If you haven’t seen Joe’s review, check it out.
The same operator refers to a submarine as a generator. Is she blind like Stevie Wonder?
Easy and Hard difficulty are completely opposite.
Fighting Mechanics aren’t balanced. Whether you’re fighting an opponent or two, your favorite monster’s screwed.
King of Kaiju Mode isn’t great. In the words of Dr. Zoidberg from “Futurama.” “Your game’s bad and you should feel bad!” By the way, both God of Destruction & King of Kaiju are the only offline modes.
Don’t waste your time on Diorama Mode. It’s pretty lame. I’d rather be invested in Sheen’s Ultra-Lord action figure. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, I was making a “Jimmy Neutron” joke.
Upgrades in Evolution Mode won’t carry your progression. To add insult to injury, the only way to gain a skill point, is to replay Evolution Mode gathering certain materials over and over again.
There’s no offline multiplayer. What’s the point of playing a fighting game, if you don’t have a friend over? Single-Player only game.
During the End Credits, one of the game developers who worked on Localization Support is Yoko Ono. I’m not kidding. That’s really her. Say what you will about Yoko, it’s not her fault she caused The Beatles (one of my favorite bands) to break-up. John Lennon wanted to try new things.
The Final Verdict: F, FOR FAKER!
Godzilla on PS4 is perhaps the worst game of 2015. I’d rather watch an Extended Cut of Roland Emmerich’s Godzilla 1998. Do not waste your money on this piece of crap. If you wanna play a good Godzilla game, play “Destroy All Monsters Melee” & “Save the Earth.”
I wanna play a future Godzilla game with the King of Monsters duking it out with his rouges gallery, (especially my favorite villain Megalon) allies, Gamera, Voltron, Ultraman, Cthulu & King Kong. It would be absolutely hilarious if Roland Emmerich’s version appears as a playable character. Just to recreate that one scene from “Godzilla: Final Wars” with the real King of Monsters instantly defeating him with a tail attack and atomic breath.
