Flashback Review: An Extremely Goofy Movie

In 1995, “A Goofy Movie” earned mixed reviews and made enough money at the box office, a direct-to-video sequel known as, “An Extremely Goofy Movie” was released in 2000. (same year Coldplay’s debut album Parachutes came out) It received good reviews from critics and movie goers alike. One of the only good direct-to-video Disney sequels. Square Enix is working on “Kingdom Hearts IV.” As of Summer 2023, no release date has been confirmed. Before the game comes out sometime in the future, I wanna share my thoughts on An Extremely Goofy Movie.”

It doesn’t matter if SPOILERS are listed. We’ve all watched Goofy cartoons, his show “Goof Troop” and played the Kingdom Hearts series.

Happy & Sad Qualities

Happy: Bill Farmer, Jason Marsden, Rob Paulsen, Paul Shore & Jim Cummings reprise their roles. They all did an excellent job for their respective voiceover performances.

Brad Garrett voices one of Bradley’s henchmen.

Animation further upgrades the previous movie’s hand drawn format.

Humor retains Goofy’s signature slapstick comedy. Don’t forget Goofy’s holler. His version of the Wilhelm Scream. Goofy’s Afro got me crackin’ up. I also laughed at the male characters dropping their jaws upon seeing Sylvia in a tight green outfit and red afro. That’s exactly how I felt when I reacted to Ice Spice. She’s delicious.

After Goofy accidentally causes damage at work costing him his job, he must earn a degree in college if he wants to find as new job. Hilarity Ensues when he enrolls in the same college Max attends. Basically, the plot from “Back to School.” Goofy & Max also participate in an extreme sports competition on ESPN. Disney owns the sports channel. Also another plot point on sports in Rodney Dangerfield’s aforementioned comedy.

Chemistry between Goofy & Max serves as the main highlight. Their interactions move the story forward.

Bradley’s appearance and big grin reminds me of Tom Cruise.

Max mentions Huey, Duey and Louie. Donald Duck’s nephews from “DuckTales.”

Chuck the Sportscaster’s based on ABC Sports commentator Keith Jackson.

Bigfoot from the first movie appears as one of Bradley’s henchmen. I guess he moved on to get a college degree.

Sad: Roxanne’s absence has never been addressed. That’s like Nyah from “Mission Impossible II” who never came back in the third installment. Remember the first movie Bobby got together with Roxanne’s friend Stacey? She’s never mentioned.

Unlike the original, the sequel lacks Musical Numbers. It’s like “Aliens” without Xenomorphs.

Goofy has an early romance with Sylvia. If this were real life, it’ll take a pair weeks or months for them to get to know one another. Then, a relationship is fully established. Disney’s notorious for hooking up a prince and princess.

Not a demerit, I didn’t cry when Goofy’s all alone when Max and pals drive off to college. Only movies that made me cry were “Logan,” “Interstellar,” Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Boys Don’t Cry,” No Time to Die,” “Now Is Good” & “Furious 7.”

The Final Verdict: B-

Not on the same high level of great sequels like Aliens, “Terminator 2: Judgement Day” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers,” An Extremely Goofy Movie serves as the grand finale of Goof Troop giving Goofy & Max an emotional send-off. Someday, Max can return in Kingdom Hearts IV as a mission giver. If you wanna introduce your kids, nephews nieces or let your kid spent the night with friends, perhaps a double featuring starting with A Goofy Movie and An Extremely Goofy Movie? Don’t be shy.
