Greetings fellow movie goers from around the world. Today’s editorial is about a Top 12 picks of actresses I’ve personally selected as eligible candidates to see in a Christopher Nolan film. Chris Nolan is my favorite filmmaker of all time and my number idol. I did a “Top 12 Male Fan Casting Choices” For A Christopher Nolan” a long time ago. If you’re curious to see which actors I’ve chosen, feel free to look it up on my blog. Before I pick which specific actress is qualified, I made a list of “Ground Rules” for this editorial.
The reason why I wanted to make this editorial, is because Christopher Nolan’s upcoming “Tenet” film will be out next year.
1. The Top 12 List featuring an individual actress is handpicked by me based on his filmography, iconic status, awards, box office etc.
2. Anyone who has worked with Chris’s favorite filmmakers including Stanley Kubrick, Ridley Scott & his late brother Tony are added to the list.
3. Darren Aronofsky is gonna be mentioned. What do he & Chris both have in common? They began their careers in 1998 starting with Pi & Following shot in black & white format. Made their second feature film in 2000 titled Requiem For A Dream & Memento shot in color format. Darren’s themes are arguably similar to Chris’ distinctive tropes. They also have a connection to Batman. Darren was nearly hired by Warner Bros. until Chris beat him.
4. Anybody possibly connected to Darren Aronofsky is gonna be included. Think of Chris & Darren as Coca-Cola & Pepsi who are very similar. Cue the line, “We’re not so different you and I.”
5. Actors who were originally handpicked by Chris, dropped out due to scheduling conflicts, are also gonna be featured.
6. Notable actors who already starred in a Nolan related project like Evan Rachel Wood in HBO’s “Westworld” or Amy Adams in “Man Of Steel” will not be on this list.
If you’re a Nolanite like me, (fan name for Nolan) now’s a good time to read. This is just my personal picks and I want to retain Nolan’s style that fits in this Top 12 article.
Top 12 Fan Casting Choices
12. Jennifer Jason Leigh
For those who are not familiar with this underrated Oscar nominated actress, Jennifer Jason Leigh made a name for herself since “Fast Times At Ridgemont High.” Afterwards, she went on to transition into dramatic territory in films including “Last Exit To Brooklyn,” “Single White Female,” “Short Cuts” among many others. Jennifer has worked with acclaimed filmmakers like Cameron Crowe, Robert Altman, The Coen Brothers, Sam Mendes, Charlie Kaufman, Rob Reiner, Alex Garland & Quentin Tarantino.
Here’s a Fun Fact, Jennifer had a part in Stanley Kubrick’s final film “Eyes Wide Shut.” After her scenes were done, Stanley demanded re-shoots. Sadly, Jennifer declined to be back on set and she was replaced by another actress. Jennifer was also considered for the role of Catwoman in “Batman Returns” until Michelle Phieffer was chosen by Tim Burton.
I think Jennifer deserves to be in a Chris Nolan film as a spiritual successor to Eyes Wide Shut” portraying a female version of Sydney Pollack’s character Victor Ziegler, a family friend of Tom Cruise’s character Dr. Bill Harford. Jennifer can also portray a chessmaster who pulls the strings to the lead protagonist’s moral dilemma.
11. Millie Bobby Brown
Fresh from her star-making role as Eleven in “Stranger Things,” Millie Bobby Brown instantly became a respected actress earning numerous awards nominations at “The Golden Globes,” “The Primetime Emmys” & “MTV Movie & TV Awards.” She ultimately won an award at The MTV Movie & TV Awards. Millie went on to co-star in “Godzilla: King Of The Monsters.” Millie is currently working on an adaptation of “Enola Holmes,” the younger sister of Sherlock Holmes. Henry Cavill has signed on to play Millie’s onscreen brother. She’ll also reprise her role as Madison Russell in the upcoming “Godzilla Vs. King Kong.”
If Chris is interested in making an epic mind-bending sci-fi adventure film about two timelines merged together in a catastrophic result, I would definitely pay my money to see Natalie Portman & Millie as the older and younger version of main protagonist who must work together to separate both timelines in order to restore humanity. Both Natalie & Millie strikingly resemble each other.
Zendaya has come a long way since she starred in “K.C. Undercover.” After leaving Disney Channel, Zendaya went on to participate in films such as “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “The Greatest Showman” & “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” Recently, she starred in an HBO series called, “Euphoria.” The series became a sleeper hit, critics and viewers praise Zendaya’s performance as Rue, a teenager struggling with drug addiction befriends a new girl named Jules. As their friendship grows, tensions escalate between them and their friends as they navigate their teenage years.
Recently, Zendaya has signed on to co-star in Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming “Dune” reboot slated for a 2020 release date. It’s gonna take a lot of hard work to get Chris’ attention to select her in a potential motion picture. If Chris watched Zendaya’s performance in Euphoria, it’ll be a dream come true to see her in a lead role as an action star similar to Ellen Ripley from the Alien franchise.
If people are shocked to learn that Chris casted Zendaya, I can see it as a wild card like Heath Ledger casted as Joker back when fans freaked out about the casting decision. When “The Dark Knight” came out, the late actor’s performance ultimately earned him an Oscar. If Chris can do another gamble, I can count on Zendaya.
9. Emma Watson
Since she was introduce as Hermione Granger in the adaptation of the “Harry Potter” series, Emma Watson became a household name alongside her two co-stars Daniel Radcliffe & Rupert Grint. The trio were adored by the public and fans of Harry Potter. During filming, Emma immediately became her character earning straight A’s at school, studying between breaks & eventually earned a degree in college at Brown University. Now that’s a lot of hard work!
After Harry Potter was finished, Emma went on to star in different films including “The Perks Of Being A Wallflower,” “The Bling Ring” “Beauty & The Beast” & Darren Aronofsky’s “Noah.” Some of her roles can be a hit or miss. Regardless of setbacks, Emma continues as a trailblazer as one of the most respected actresses in recent times. We all know Emma has worked with Darren, now it’s the right moment for her to collaborate with Chris Nolan. I can picture her in a villainous role much like her performance as a real life burglar in The Bling Ring combined with Robin Williams’s performance as Walter Finch from “Insomnia.”
I sense a bright future ahead for a future collaboration with Emma & Chris. If this happens, it’ll be a dream come true. As long as they don’t have a busy schedule.
8. Cate Blanchett
Known for her versatility in various roles, Cate Blanchett is currently one of Hollywood’s most respected actresses earning two Oscars for her roles as Katherine Hepburn in Martin Scorsese’s “The Aviator” & Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine.” Cate has worked with a list of critically acclaimed filmmakers including Peter Jackson, David Fincher, Ridley Scott, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Wes Anderson, Kenneth Branagh & Taika Waititi.
When the time is right, Cate needs to work with Chris Nolan in a potential film. Perhaps a gritty non-linear crime thriller with an ensemble cast of characters as a throwback to Robert Altman films about a variety of characters interconnected to a storyline. This time, each character has a purpose in a murder mystery. Cate can play a witness to the crime or a private investigator struggling to put the puzzle pieces together due to stress between her job and personal struggles with her family.
At some point of her career, I believe one day Cate will sign on to partake in a future Chris Nolan project as long as the script is crafted intelligently for her to understand the concept of a complex story. She’s done something like this before since “The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy.”
7. Emma Stone
Another Emma added to my Top 12 List. This time an Oscar winning actress. Emma Stone has been around in Hollywood since her debut in “Superbad.” She later gained worldwide recognition in movies such as “Zombieland,” “Easy A,” “Crazy, Stupid Love,” “The Help,” “The Amazing Spider-Man,” “Birdman,” & her Oscar winning performance as Mia Dolan in “La La Land.” Emma will reprise her role as Wichita in “Zombieland: Double Tap” & will play Cruella de Vil in a prequel to “101 Dalmatians.”
Emma has a knack for balancing between seriousness and comedy juggling emotions effectively whether it’s played for laughs or played for drama. Now that Emma is a big name in Hollywood, Chris Nolan definitely needs to pick Emma for a specific project that best suits her acting range. What about a cyberpunk adventure drama inspired by Stanley Kubrick & Steven Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence? Emma can play an android who struggles to learn her true purpose as a robot, embarks on an odyssey to learn about her previous life as a human.
I can visualize Emma & Chris working on a character study about a dead person who’s resurrected as a robot similar to “RoboCop” & “Ghost In The Shell.” Chris’ brother Jonathan has worked on Westworld, maybe he can help his older brother by giving him the works of Phillip K. Dick as a guide.
6. Sandra Bullock
Since she was around in The 90’s, Sandra Bullock has a knack for playing a variety of characters in serious dramas and comedies as a versatile actress adapting to her environment in films ranging from “Speed,” “Miss Congeniality,” “Crash,” “The Heat,” “Gravity” “Minions,” “Ocean’s 8” & her Oscar winning role as Leigh Anne Tuohy in “The Blind Side.” With an impressive resume, Sandra is a highly influential actress who isn’t just a cocky individual who wants attention on the spotlight, she’s actually a nice person donating to charities.
Chris Nolan on the other hand, is a influential filmmakers inspiring future filmmakers similar to Sandra inspiring future actresses. I can picture a collaboration between the two in a psychological mystery sci-fi horror thriller set in space. Sandra can play a scientist who must team up with a band of crew members to track down who’s killing members of a space station. Besides Sandra, the story can also feature a crew member’s perspective told in a non-linear format.
It’ll take a cohesive narrative for Chris to convince Sandra in a starring role as long as she doesn’t find the story very difficult to understand.
5. Sarah Paulson
If you’re a fan of “American Horror Story,” Sarah Paulson is a frequent collaborator of Ryan Murphy. American Horror Story showcased her acting abilities in different seasons playing a television psychic, a journalist, a mentor to witches, a two-headed circus performer, a ghost in a hotel & a British actress. Sarah ultimately won a Golden Globe & Emmy for “Best Supporting Actress” for her performance as Marcia Clark in “American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J.”
Besides television, Sarah also worked in films including “Serenity,” “Mud,” “12 Years A Slave,” “Carol,” “The Post” & “Ocean’s 8.” She will star as Nurse Ratched in a prequel to “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” on Netflix & “Mrs. America” on FX. Both shows are produced by Ryan Murphy.
Sarah has yet to work with Chris Nolan. Maybe she can play a gifted inventor like Q from “James Bond” or Lucius Fox from “The Dark Knight Trilogy.” She helps the lead character by giving him or her the tools needed to fight through dangerous obstacles. I can view Sarah proving comic relief delivering sarcastic one-liners during an intense situation.
4. Nicole Kidman
Formerly known as Mrs. Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman has been around in The 90’s since gained recognition as Tom Cruise’s wife. She managed to attract attention to Hollywood in movies ranging from “Days Of Thunder” “Far & Away,” “Batman Forever,” “Eyes Wide Shut,” Moulin Rouge,” “The Others,” “Cold Mountain,” “Rabbit Hole, “Paddington,” “Aquaman” & her Oscar winning performance as Virginia Woolf in “The Hours.” Besides movies, she also won many awards for her role as Celeste Wright on HBO’s “Big Little Lies.”
Like her ex-husband Tom, Nicole has worked with a list of notable directors such as Stanley Kubrick, Tony Scott, Gus Van Sant, George Miller, Ron Howard, Baz Luhrmann, Joel Schumacher, Rob Marshall, Sydney Pollack, The Wachowski Brothers/Sisters, Sofia Coppola & James Wan. Quite an accomplishment working with creative talent.
Due to her experience working with Stanley Kubrick’s last movie “Eyes Wide Shut,” I think Chris should hire Nicole in an epic conspiracy thriller as one of the individuals linked to a controversial event or person. Think of it as a spiritual successor to “All The President’s Men” & “JFK,” but told as a fictional story inspired by real life events reflecting the political climate. She can play a private detective searching for clues.
3. Margot Robbie
In 2012, Martin Scorsese casted an Australian actress to portray Jordon Belfort’s wife Naomi in “The Wolf Of Wall Street.” Margot Robbie’s performance earned critical praise catapulting her way as an A-List actress portraying Batman villain Harley Quinn in “Suicide Squad” “Focus,” & received her very first Oscar nomination for her performance as figure skater Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya.” Margot later co-starred in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” as the late Sharon Tate.” Margot will reprise her role as Harley Quinn in “Birds Of Prey.”
Now that Margot has gained a reputation as an A-Lister, she definitely needs to participate in a Chris Nolan film. Maybe Chris can select her in a horror movie he has never done before in his career as a spiritual successor to Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” as an investigative journalist who tries to seek answers of a massive hotel hiding deep dark secrets. If that doesn’t work well, maybe a future season of “Westworld” with Jonathan Nolan & Lisa Joy as showrunners. She can portray a new android as an upgraded version of Dolores who squares off against the original Dolores.
If a film or television production is available for Margot not interfering her role as Harley Quinn, its a dream team collaboration with The Nolan Brothers that needs to become a reality.
2. Charlize Theron
Like her peers Sandra Bullock & Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron worked in The Film Industry in The 90’s. She gained recognition in notable films including “The Devil’s Advocate,” “Mighty Joe Young,” “The Italian Job,” “Æon Flux,” “Prometheus,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Tully,” “Atomic Blonde,” “Fate Of The Furious” & last but not least her Oscar winning performance as Aileen Wuornos in “Monster.”
Charlize is known for her selective roles told in a variety of distinctive genres. As a result of her performances praised by critics and movie goers alike, she has become one of the most talented actresses in Hollywood gaining deep respect towards her peers, directors and producers. Charlize will star in an animated adaptation of “The Addams Family,” reprise her role as Cipher in “Fast & Furious 9” & Lorraine Broughton in “Atomic Blonde 2.”
Charlize is overdue to work with Chris Nolan in a future project. I can picture them working on a political thriller similar to “V For Vendetta” or an alternate history movie like “Watchmen” with androids taking over our society since The Industrial Era. Remember I mentioned Emma Stone as an android going on an odyssey? How about she & Charlize can portray androids working together to find their purpose in life.
Peyton Elizabeth Lee
1. Natalie Portman
My number one pick is Natalie Portman. She’s one of my favorite actresses on this list besides Emma Watson & Sarah Paulson. Natalie has been around in The Film Industry since she made debut in Luc Besson’s “Leon: The Professional,” her performance as Mathilda caught the attention of George Lucas who later casted her Padmé Amidala in Star Wars’ Prequel Trilogy. Natalie transitioned to mature roles as a stripper in “Closer,” a young woman roped in the middle of a dystopian political battle involving a masked vigilante, & last but not least, her Oscar wining role as Nina in Darren Aronofsky in “Black Swan.”
Natalie is an intelligent and gifted individual who graduated college at Harvard juggling between acting and education, fluent in Hebrew & wrote a newspaper at college. Natalie also worked with an impressive list of filmmakers including Tim Burton, Michael Mann, Kenneth Branagh, The Wachowski Brothers/Sisters, Mike Nichols & Alex Garland.
Due to her experience working with Darren Aronofsky, Chris Nolan has got to work with Natalie if it doesn’t effect their working schedules and family life. Remember I’ve mentioned Millie Bobby Brown starring with Natalie in a movie about two timelines merging together in a catastrophic way? Both Natalie & Millie need to play the main character from two timelines as younger and older versions of the protagonist who need to separate their respective timeline to save humanity.
Natalie deserves a chance to work with my all time filmmaker as gritty and serious version of “Back To The Future” involving timelines merging outta control.
That’s all I got for my Top 12 List. Which actress do you think should work with Christopher Nolan? Please leave a comment here and don’t forget to check out my Top 12 Male Actors Who Need To Work With Christopher Nolan.
